The three presidents who served full terms before Alvi were Chaudhary Fazal Elahi, who held office as the fifth president from 1973 to 1978, followed by Asif Ali Zardari, the eleventh president, who served from 2008 to 2013, and then Mamnoon Hussain, the twelfth president, who held the position from 2013 to 2018.

Moreover, President Alvi is poised to continue his tenure indefinitely due to the absence of an electoral body responsible for selecting the president.

According to the law, the president is chosen through a process involving members of both houses of the parliament, the Senate and the National Assembly, along with representatives from the four provincial assemblies.
