Commissioner Karachi Muhammad Saleem Rajput on Saturday imposed a ban on the carrying/ display of arms, aerial firing and use of fireworks in the metropolis for two days under Section 144 of the criminal procedure code to safeguard precious lives of citizens on New Year's Eve (Dec 31 and Jan 01).

The commissioner, exercising powers conferred under section 144 (6) of the CrPC delegated by the home department, imposed a complete ban on these activities for two days i-e 31st December 2023 and January 01, 2024, with immediate effect.

All SHOs of the city have been authorised to register the complaints under Section 188 PPC in writing for the violation of Section 144 Cr.PC, notification stated.

Meanwhile, the city police chief has said that strict action would be taken against people resorting to aerial firing on New Year's Eve.

In a message on the social media platform 'X', Additional Inspector General Khadim Hussain Rind said that those indulging in jubilant firing on New Year's Eve would be booked under different charges including attempted murder.

He urged citizens to report incidents of aerial firing in their area to the police via the 15 helpline. They can also share videos of people resorting to aerial firing through the WhatsApp number: 0330-2699211.

Separately, chief police surgeon Dr Summaiya Syed Tariq wrote on X, "I sincerely hope that we do not resort to #AerialFiring this New Year's Eve to celebrate 2024. There are other quieter and safer ways to do that. Don't make the start ( perhaps longer or even forever)  of 2024 painful and agonizing for others."

New Year celebrations are marred by the irresponsible practice of aerial firing, posing a serious threat to public safety. Stray bullets resulting from this reckless activity not only cause injuries but also lead to fatalities.
